Budget 2009

Staff donate a week each on average, to keep UB operational
In 2008, University of Ballarat began the rollout of the new PeopleSoft student administration and finance software packages.
In March NTEU at UB asked University staff to provide information about how many additional unpaid hours they have worked as a consequence of the rollout. The survey revealed that the average time donated per respondent was 55 hours. Statistically speaking, we can be 95% certain that the average for all staff members affected by the rollout is in excess of 38 hours - more than a standard working week.
Affected staff include those dealing directly with Campus Solutions or Financials; those who have to set up duplicate data records because Campus Solutions does not provide the information they need; academic staff required to rewrite existing material to match the software's terminology; TAFE staff involved in student invoicing; IT and CAST staff; library staff and many others.
The full story is available in the latest newsletter, UB News May 09 out now.

Pay Rise January 2009
All University of Ballarat staff covered by the UB Union Collective Agreement 2008-2009 received a pay rise at 4 January 2009.
This pay rise was achieved by the hard work of union members at UB. If you're not already a member, it's time to invest some of that pay rise back and join your colleagues in the union. To join online, go to www.nteu.org.au/nteu/join; or contact the Branch Office on 03 5327 9163 or email ballarat@vic.nteu.org.au
Check here to see what you should be expecting and compare your increase to what union membership will cost you. Union membership provides excellent benefits including discounted goods and services; and dues are tax deductible - so however you measure it, membership is a GREAT investment in your working life!

AWA Termination
Branch President Jeremy Smith, the University of Ballarat and NTEU reached agreement in early 2008 on terms to settle the AWA case in the Federal Court, and also related matters. A key part of the agreement is that the University will agree to terminate AWAs for any staff member currently on an AWA with the University, and return the staff member to the terms and conditions of the UB Union Collective Agreement.
With a new Agreement almost finalised, you must take action NOW if you wish to terminate your AWA and return to the improved pay and conditions of the Collective Agreement. Click the link below to find out how.

Regional Education Forum
On 15 May the Branch hosted a very successful regional forum, where we were extremely fortunate to hear from five key speakers.
Wide-ranging discussions resulted in general consensus about the crucial importance of regional universities to the future of regional Australia; and the amazing contribution made by UB to the region it serves. The Vice-Chancellor praised the NTEU UB Branch for its foresight in organising the forum and providing an opportunity to discuss the important issues around regional education in a participative manner.
And NTEU - through the National President - pledged to work with the Vice-Chancellor in lobbying for the future sustainability of UB
