UPDATE 13th JULY - BOND CONSULTANT SETS IT OUT - NO MOVEMENT ON AWA's
The response to our 24 items of concern in the template AWA has now been received from the Bond Uni consultant.
In essence, it is a non-response. The phrase consistently used throughout the letter is "These provisions have been streamlined to improve the existing process, which will become part of the university policy [and the] AWA grievance and dispute settlement process applies to any employees who have a grievance in relation to their employment conditions". There is no evidence of any "improvements" to existing processes as claimed in the letter. The removal of the legally binding processes regarding misconduct and termination or watering down of grievance processes (in the EBA) into non legally binding policy is not an improvement to process unless you specifically want to make it easier to sack staff. Remember, it is Bond University Policy "as amended from time to time" (AWA cls 26).
To add insult to injury, because of the generally adversarial nature of grievance procedures, the AWA grievance procedures will give little comfort to those staff with a dispute. Where the EBA dispute clauses provided for recommendations or decisions from the commission which were binding on both parties, the AWA makes provisions only for conciliation - any recommendations coming from the Commission are not binding.
The response suggests that management have little interest in your concerns about the AWA's or about the industrial atmosphere at Bond generally. The rhetoric of "genuine choice" pushed by the government and being pedalled at Bond could not be further from the truth.
MEETING WITH VC ....
We have telephoned and written to the Vice-Chancellor again seeking a meeting to discuss the industrial situation on your behalf. We are awaiting a response and hope to provide members with feedback this week.
