Casual Rates of Pay

Casual Academic Staff.

Are you being paid correctly?

Casual Academic Salary Rates are contained in Schedule 3 of the Academic Union Collective Agreement which can be found online at the Griffith University HRM webpage http://www.griffith.edu.au/hrm/employee_relations/awas.html

The Guidelines for payment of Casual academic staff set out the minimum standards that a tutor or lecturer engaged casually can expect to be afforded.

“Contemporaneous Marking”

Contemporaneous marking is marking of student work done within the teaching weeks and directly associated with the lecture or tutorial program.  An allowance is made within the standard payment for a tutorial or lecture as follows -

For each 1hour delivery/presentation:

1hour for preparation

45 minutes for marking

15 minutes for consultation, record keeping etc.

Any marking over and above this allowance within the teaching weeks must be paid at the correct marking rate.

Payment for marking

Marking of essays, assignments and exams that are not directly associated with the tutorial or lecture must be paid at the correct marking rate.  If the full allowance for contemporaneous marking it is not used it is not to be taken off the  marking payment for end of semester marking.

This practise has occurred in many schools despite clarification from both the union and HRM and those who have not been paid correctly for marking can make a claim for correct payment.

Lecturing

Those engaged to provide lectures are required to be paid at the correct level for the work performed. All marking other than contemporaneous marking must be paid.

If the casual academic is required to develop a series of lectures and course notes and is not provided with notes and course outlines by the course convenor the lecturer should be paid a higher rate than the basic lecturing rate of two hours associated work for each hours presentation which is only designed to allow the lecturer to read and acquaint themselves with the materials for presentation.

Tutoring

The basic rate for tutoring is for staff engaged to present a tutorial to students and work through a defined tutorial outline.

Those who hold a relevant doctoral qualification and/or coordinate a course are to be paid at the higher tutorial rate. This is not subject to negotiation and is a requirement based on duties and/or qualifications that must be paid.

Other Required Academic Activity

All other academic work attracts an hourly rate, the university is required to pay for all work performed that is not lecturing, tutoring or marking. This may include administration associated with course coordination, attendance at meetings, seminars or lectures, demonstrations, musical accompaniment etc.

The hourly rate for other required academic activity is currently $30.35 or $36.42 for doctoral qualifications and/or full course coordination

Contracts of Engagement

A contract for casual employment is accompanied by a schedule setting out the agreed payment for all work performed and should include marking payments and payment for other required academic activity.

Casual academic staff who are expected to undertake end of semester marking should be clear on the expectations of the school or department regarding the time allotted to each paper and the marking guidelines for the course.

Work done over and above that required in the contract schedule before or after the semester is to be paid for at the hourly rate for other required academic activity

Griffith Business School Sessional Staff Calculator

The use of the sessional staff calculator in GBS is to be considered a guide only when allocating work to sessional academics.  The sessional staff calculator automatically allocates work at the lowest level of payment for the work performed.  Those who hold a doctoral qualification or are involved in full course coordination are to be paid at the higher applicable rates for tutoring, marking and associated work.

Head Tutors.

There is currently no set criteria for the allocation of a Head tutor in the collective agreement, those appointed to this role should be aware that all extra work required in this role must be paid for at the other academic activity rate as previously described regardless of number of students enrolled.

Advice and Assistance for Casual staff

Please contact the Griffith Branch office for further advice if your payments for work undertaken are not as set out in this brief guide.

The union will pursue all underpayments for casual members.

Membership of the NTEU for casual staff is encouraged to ensure that your rights are protected and starts at just $27.50 for six months.
