Our Universities Matter
Investing in People and Society
After more than a decade of funding neglect, climbing student-staff ratios, and growing corporatisation of universities the implications are being sharply felt by academic and general staff in the way they conduct and administer teaching and research. At the same time, conditions of many staff are regulated by agreements struck under the previous government's harsh industrial laws, so that effectively the WorkChoices laws still applies to many University staff many months after the fall of the Government that introduced them.
In 2008 NTEU members have commenced a major campaign under the banner of "Our Universities Matter - Investing in People and Society". With the Federal Government currently conducting a review of higher education the aims include a reinvestment in our universites and a recognition of their status, importance and role in our communities, as well as securing agreements which seek to improve pay, conditions and career opportunities for their most important asset - their academic and general staff.
Comprehensive information and resources are available on the NTEU's campaign website: www.ouruniversitiesmatter.com.au. Updates on the campaign and progress of bargaining at your branch can be found at your NTEU Branch Website.
How can you help?
Contact your Branch Organiser if you are interested in helping in tasks to advance the campaign in your branch or department, school or work unit.
Collective Bargaining
During 2008-2009 all Australian public universities will negotiate new Collective Agreements, which will set salary levels and employment conditions for staff for the next three years.
The Union's key bargaining claims are:
-
A competitive salary increase.
-
Improved job security through restoration of employment conditions lost through the previous Federal Government’s legislation and requirements.
-
Clear and substantive workload regulation for academic and general staff.
-
Fair and objective classification procedures for general staff.
-
Increased Indigenous employment.
-
Improvements in pay, job security, career paths and superannuation for casual academic staff.
-
Better job security and employment conditions for contract research staff.
For more information about claims at your university, go to your Branch website

University Governance
The NTEU NSW Division, in representing its members, has an interest in engaging with the issue of university governance.
The NSW Legislative Council (the Upper House) has initiated an inquiry into NSW university governance. Information about how you can be involved and resources can be found on this page.
There is also information on 'Why University Governance is a Union Issue' and how university governance forms part of the Our Universities Matter campaign.
Why University Governance is a Union Issue
The governance of universities is a Union issue as it speaks to all university staffs’ industrial rights, and responsibilities, particularly as:
- Staff rights are recognised in international conventions on higher education (of which Australia is a signatory), and the role of the NTEU in protecting and enhancing these rights.
- Intellectual freedom and university governance are linked, as staff must be able to actively participate in governance in order to exercise their right and responsibility to engage in debates concerning the effective operation of their institution.
- Rights are essential to underpin the identity of universities as public institutions.
- Rights of staff to participate in governance are not a conflict of interest with other roles staff play in the university community, including positions held with the NTEU.
(Taken from an address by the NTEU National President Carolyn Allport, click here for the full text )
Within the NTEU, the peak decision making body, National Council, has passed a number of motions about University Governance and these can be accessed below.
Our Universities Matter and University Governance
The theme of university governance is also taken up under the banner of the Our Universities Matter campaign and is referred to in the context of the following themes:
- Charter for Union Renewal
- A Discrete Universities Act
- Statement on Academic Freedom and University Independence
What you can do
- Recently the NSW Upper House conducted an inquiry into NSW
University Governance and the NTEU made a submission (see below).
The final report can be found on the inquiry
website.
- The NSW Division is interested in setting up a network of members who sit on University governance committees, especially on the governing body (eg Council, Senate, Board of Trustees) and Academic Board/Academic Senate. Further information about this will be available soon.
- The NSW Division is organising training in 2009 for members who currently sit on governing bodies. Further information about this will be available soon.

Environmentally Sustainable Universities
Australia's universities are high energy users and waste producers, but also important environmental researchers and leaders in developing solutions to climate change. As the nation's engine rooms for knowledge and innovation, universities should play key leadership roles in finding solutions for climate change and modelling best practice in environmentally sustainable operations.
In 1990, a group of university leaders produced the Talloires (pronounced 'tal-whar') Declaration. Administered by University Leaders for a Sustainable Future, the Talloires Declaration is a ten-point action plan where signatories commit to incorporating sustainability and environmental literacy to teaching, research, operations and outreach at colleges and universities. It has been signed by over 350 university presidents and chancellors in over 40 countries.
NTEU believes that all Australian universities should be signatories to the Talloires Declaration. To date, only twelve Australian universities have signed:
- Australian National University
- RMIT University
- University of Melbourne
- University of Technology, Sydney
- Charles Sturt University
- Southern Cross University
- University of New England
- University of the Sunshine Coast
- Monash University
- University of Canberra
- University of New South Wales
- University of Western Sydney
