Divisions
Members together at State and Territory level
NTEU Divisions are the representative structure of members established in each State and Territory. The structure consists of Division Council and Division Executive. The Divisions employ industrial staff and have a range of Committees.
DIVISION COUNCIL
The Council comprises:
- Division Officers (President, Vice-President [Academic], Vice-President [General],Secretary, Assistant Secretary (or Secretaries)
- Division Councillors (i.e. those elected as National Councillors in that State or Territory)
- Indigenous Representative
Division Council usually meets once a year. Rules provide both for designated Division Officers, as well as designated representation for academic and general staff where appropriate. Divisions can also enact by-laws to govern their affairs in the same way as Branches.
It is the Division Council that elects the Division President and the sectional positions of Vice-President (Academic) and Vice-President (General). There is also one section position for each of academic and general, elected by the relevant section group. The Division Secretary and Assistant Secretaries are elected by the membership at large. Importantly the positions of President and Secretary are not sectionalised.
DIVISION EXECUTIVE
The
Division Executive is composed of the Secretary and Assistant
Secretary or Secretaries and a number of members elected by and
from Division Council. In many states, the Division Council and
Division Executive are conflated for operational purposes, and the
main body acting is the Division Executive that meets regularly
during the year.
Divisions employ Industrial, Organiser/Recruitment and Administrative staff that work with the Branch in enterprise bargaining, public campaigns, recruitment, and individual disputes. In some Divisions, Division Officers work full-time for the Union (usually Division Secretary).
Divisions often have committees, networks, and caucus structures to enhance decision making and servicing of members - e.g. Casual networks, student union networks, Indigenous networks, Women’s Caucus, and QUTE (GLBTI) Caucus. In additions, Divisions often set up working parties to deal with specific issues and to link members from Branches with staff at Division level. These are not provided for in the formal representative structure but are an important part of the Union's work.
Division Council sets the Division fee.
