Don't Eat The Cash Cow

Posted 15 November 2011 by Lachlan Hurse (University of Queensland)

MEETING: 17 NOVEMBER 2011

12 NOON

ROOM E302  FORGAN SMITH BUILDING (1)

ALL WELCOME

Less than half the money Arts students pay for their courses goes to the schools within the Arts Faculty. The remainder goes to research Centres, general capital (buildings etc.) and administrative costs.

The University wants to cut the teaching budgets of Schools within the Faculty of Arts even further, despite rising student numbers.

Undergraduate teaching in the Faculty of Arts has been treated as a cash cow for the university as a whole. And now the University has decided to eat the cow!

Further cuts will lead to a poorer quality education for Arts students, will leave postgraduates without training or financial support, and will hobble the expertise of full time staff.

The NTEU demands;

  • that the University makes budgetary processes transparent,
  • that the University adequately funds the teaching of undergraduate courses in Arts, and
  • that the Dean of Arts continues to consult with Schools.

COME AND SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR THE ARTS FACULTY
