NTEU expresses concern over Invitation for Lord Monckton to speak at Notre Dame Forum
On 28 June 2011 the NTEU Branch at the University of Notre Dame Australia sent a letter to Notre Dame Vice-Chancellor Professor Celia Hammond expressing the Union’s concern at the University’s decision to invite Lord Christopher Monckton to speak at a University event.
Lord Monckton has a track record of attempting to use personal abuse and vilification as part of attempts to silence respected academics communicating the results of their research. The NTEU was concerned that this invitation perpetuated a misconception in the community that Notre Dame does not stand for free and open inquiry. This perception was reinforced by media reports that Notre Dame was obliged to host Lord Monckton as a consequence of accepting an endowment.
The NTEU requested that Notre Dame take action that would correct this misconception by giving serious consideration to cancelling the planned event.
The NTEU recently held a national climate change conference. For proceedings visit Pushing the Boundaries.
