NZ Voluntary student union submission (Douglas Bill) - 21/03/2010

Posted 21 March 2010 by NTEU (NTEU National Office)

NTEU made a submission to the New Zealand Parliamentary Education and Science Select Committee regarding the Roger Douglas’ Education (Freedom of Association) Bill, which seeks to introduce Australian style Voluntary Student Unionism (VSU) to higher education institutions in New Zealand.

In consultation with NZUSA, NTEU’s submission highlights the impact of VSU in Australia and recommends that the Bill not be adopted.  In doing so, the submission urges the Committee to seriously consider what the ramifications would be in a New Zealand context. The Union argued that should this legislation be passed, it is highly likely that it will have the opposite effect of what is intended.
