“What’s the point of TOIL if you can’t take it?”, members say

Posted 2 June 2011 by John Pezy (Flinders University)

A group of members has alerted the NTEU to the difficulties they are experiencing with being able to use Time Off In Lieu (TOIL) that they have accrued, usually because management simply won’t allow staff to take TOIL in large enough blocks to use it up. Members also feel that the time spent away will merely exacerbate their existing workload problems. Is this a problem in your workplace?  If so, please contact  lschroeder@nteu.org.au. In the meantime, you should keep a private record of the hours that your work, even if your reported hours are less.

[ +1 ] The advice here to "keep a private record of hours worked" is unhelpful. Any TOIL or OT should be discussed with the manager in advance and within 30 days it should be taken or paid. If niether TOIL or OT is agreed to, then don't do extra work and take control of your own work/life balance.

[ +1 ] Similar issue with annual leave.

Management doesn't care about burn out or even quality of life. They consider unpaid overtime as expected part of employment.
