Are you TOILing for the correct TOIL?

Posted 10 November 2011 by John Pezy (Flinders University)

A recent spate of enquiries to the Monash Branch show that in many areas where staff accrue TOIL, it is not being accrued at the correct rate.  Under our Enterprise Agreement, TOIL must accrue at the same rate that overtime would be paid.

Overtime is paid as follows:

Monday to Saturday inclusive: ordinary rate + 50% (time and a half) for the first 3 hours of TOIL – after the first three hours, the rate increases to ordinary rate + 100% (double time)

Sundays: ordinary time +100% (double time)

University holidays, ordinary time plus 150% (double time and a half)

TOIL should accrue at the same rates.

Members in a number of areas have also reported experiencing difficulty getting approval to take TOIL. Often this is an indicator of excessive workloads. If you and your colleagues are having trouble getting approval to take your TOIL, please let Liz Schroeder know at lschroeder@nteu.org.au.
