DEFENDING HUMAN RIGHTS IN COLOMBIA: A HIGH-RISK ACTIVITY

Peace Brigades International presents a public forum exploring the state of human rights in Colombia. ANTI WHALING DEMONSTRATION

A demonstration to protest against the start of the whaling seasons in the Southern Oceans of Australia. On this day 45 cities around the world will all be protesting in unison. In Australia we are joined by protests in Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide and Brisbane. There will be various attractions and entertainment staged at Treasury Gardens as well as some food and beverage sales. Group commences from Treasury Gardens at 11.30am to march to Parliament House to hear messages from key speakers, then back to Treasury Gardens for lunch and entertainment by African drummers, Thornbury High School Band and Shaun Kirk (blues guitarist).

MEMORIAL FOR SHOT WHARFIE

An event to honour the memory of Allan Whittaker - with retired judge Frank Vincent and ACTU sec, Ged Kearney - will be held at 11 am, near the spot where he was shot - Beacon Cove - halfway between Princes and Station Pier. Allan Whittaker was shot by police during the 1928 waterfront strike, and died of his wound three months later. 11am. Sunday Nov 7th. Further information: 9329 5477

JUSTICE FOR REFUGEES: END MANDATORY DETENTION

The Refugee Advocacy Network has called another mass rally and march. 2pm, State Library (Swanston and Latrobe St, City). The focus of the rally will be to call for an end to the policy of Mandatory Detention. We have a new parliament, but the old, brutal policy of mandatory detention remains. Indonesian environmentalists speak out against Australia's carbon offset schemes. Two climate justice activists from Friends of the Earth Indonesia, Indonesia’s largest and oldest environment organisation, are joined by Muliadi from Central Kalimantan to discuss Australia's plans for forest offsets in Indonesia. 6.30pm. NEXT AFGHANISTAN VIGIL: DIE-IN AND SPEAK-OUT

4-6pm - steps of Flinders St Station. Thank you everyone who has participated in the actions against the Afghanistan war that we have held this year. Our monthly vigils have attracted the attention of thousands of people and we have handed out about 3,000 leaflets. The flashmob action last month attracted many new people to participate - and was a great way to creatively express our resistance. This month Malalai Joya, a member of the previous Afghan parliament, an activist for democracy, human and women's rights and an outspoken critic of warlords of all persuasions will address Melbourne’s monthly Afghanistan vigil. At 3.50pm we will be ready with red signs 'no more casualties in Afghanistan'. We invite you to collect one, and at 4pm people will spontaneously drop to the ground in the Flinders St vicinity. After a minute or so, Malalai will begin to address the crowd. Chip Henriss, an Australian military veteran from Standfast (http://stand-fast.webs.com) will also speak, with others to be announced.

HUMAN RIGHTS AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING

RMIT’s Australian Centre for Human Rights Education and Stop.Traffick invite you to a public forum. The UN estimates that up to 4 million people are trafficked every year, with violations of human rights being both a cause and a consequence of trafficking. Join us and a panel of leading human rights experts to discuss how we all can make a difference. Stop.Traffick is an RMIT student group whose aim is to raise awareness about human trafficking issues and how everyday society can help put an end to it. The forum will also launch the Stop.Traffick website produced by Ben Shearman, a first-year TAFE student of interactive digital media at RMIT. Jane Kelsey is one of New Zealand's best-known critical commentators on issues of globalisation, structural adjustment and decolonisation. ‘Not 1 More’ aims to raise awareness of the devastating impact of family violence on our community by remembering the 60 women and 20 children who are killed each year in incidents of family violence homicide. This year Fed Square will host an even more dynamic White Ribbon Day – Not1More – event, with the Walk Against Violence arriving at the square at 12.30, the ‘Loudest Shout’ in the evening, a special appearance by the ‘Choir of Hope and Inspiration’ plus a day packed with activities and performers. The event will will run from 10am until 7.30pm.
