Demand Driven Funding Already Starting to Bite at La Trobe

A story entitled Uni faces funding black hole, in today’s Australian states that:

LA TROBE University appears to be the first casualty of the federal government's new student funding system.

In an email to staff Vice Chancellor Professor Paul Johnson states the university is confronting a $36million budget deficit due to aggressive recruiting of domestic by Monash and Melbourne as result of declining international student demand.  The VC note that La Trobe, along with all other universities “face unprecedented conditions with the deregulation of the higher education sector".

As Virginia Mansel Lees, NTEU Branch President noted the situation being faced by La Trobe "highlights the deep flaws with the demand-driven system".
