Emergency rally to save TAFE in Victoria
This Thursday, 20 September, 1pm, Treasury Gardens
We are now fighting for the very survival of TAFE in Victoria.
Documents leaked to the ABC last Thursday show how savage and devastating the Baillieu Government's TAFE cuts are for the Victorian economy and the futures of young people.
A dozen campuses are under threat: Lilydale, Prahran, Castlemaine, Yallourn, Moreland, Ararat, Mornington, Bass Coast, Cranbourne, Sunbury ... a roll call of shame for the Baillieu Government. And there are more listed in the document.
The cuts to programs strike at the heart of the Victorian economy: automotive, painting and decorating, building, events and tourism are among the course offerings that TAFE institutes have told the Government they will have to axe. Again, there are many more listed in the document.
Hundreds of job losses have been announced this week at two TAFE institutes alone; the leaked paper makes clear these are the tip of the iceberg. You can download the document and read it for yourself here (PDF).
This news demands an immediate response and we shall give it. The TAFE4All campaign is calling a rally to be held on Premier Baillieu's doorstep in Treasury Gardens at midday this Thursday.
We need you there, and we need you to bring your students, your colleagues, your friends and family.
Students, please wear your work gear for the rally. Let's show Baillieu, Ryan, Hall and the rest exactly what Victoria is losing – its chefs, mechanics, builders, carpenters, events managers, trainers, accountants and hairdressers.
We all need to stand up for our TAFEs. See you on Thursday.Greg Barclay, AEU deputy vice president, TAFE
Colin Long, NTEU Victorian Division secretary
