Motion Passed in unanimity by Monash University NTEU Branch Committee, 27 October 2011 - Occupy Melbourne
The Monash University NTEU Branch Committee welcomes the establishment of a Melbourne branch of the global Occupy Wall Street movement. We note the call from the Community Outreach Working Group and the General Assembly of 15 October for participation by unionists and support from unions: http://www.greenleft.org.au/node/49102
From our own experience as workers at Monash University we are conscious of the need to address the ever-worsening working conditions generated by casualisation, workload increases, wage and salary disparities between senior management and staff and the proliferation of senior management numbers.
We note recent reports in evidence of this:
The university’s own staff survey:

Plus recent reports in the Australian:

We strongly endorse this call for unionists to be involved in this movement and urge NTEU members to check out the website (http://occupymelbourne.org/) and to consider the proposals offered for support and participation including:
· Speaking about the occupation and associated events to other union members at your workplace and distributing this flier.
· Joining the community outreach working group.
· Asking your officials about formal endorsement by your union
· Marching with other members in protests organised by Occupy Melbourne.
“We have all felt the effects of rising social inequity, unrestrained capital and diminishing investment in social infrastructure. The Occupy movement is an opportunity for all of us to be part of reclaiming the public debate. We are the 99% and we ask you to get involved.”
