NTEU supports petition to save Australian auto industry

Posted 30 January 2012 by Andrew Nette (NTEU National Office)

NTEU is supporting a petition launched today by the Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union (AMWU) calling on all members of Federal Parliament to continue supporting the Australian car manufacturing industry, in reponse to the Coalition's decisiont to axe funding and threaten jobs in the auto industry.

Despite the auto industry's value to Australia, the Coalition are set to end their support for the industry by refusing to commit to any assistance beyond 2015, denying the industry $1 billion in support in the years to 2020.

"A sustainable car manufacturing industry must be a partnership between car companies, workers and their unions, and all sides of politics," said AMWU National Secretary, Dave Oliver in a statement released today.

NTEU would add that to be truly sustainable Australia's auto industry also needs the support of universities and the reseaerch and innovation they produce.
