Petition of 15,002 signatures against the closure of the Swinburne's Lilydale & Prahran campuses presented to Opposition Leader

Posted 12 September 2012 by Carmel Shute (NTEU National Office)

A Save Swinburne’s Lilydale and Prahran campuses petition with 15,002 signatures was presented on the steps of Parliament House this afternoon to Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews, Martin Foley, the member for Albert Park, and James Merlino, the shadow Education Minister and member for Monbulk, close to the Lilydale campus.

Mr Andrews committed the opposition to delivering a new TAFE funding policy.

The petition called for the Baillieu Government to restore funding to Swinburne University, to guarantee no further cuts would be  made, and to ensure that a full range of public TAFE and university opportunities remain available in the local community.

The signatures were collected from staff, students, local traders and concerned community members in and around Lilydale and Prahran as part of the community campaign against the closure of the campuses stemming from the Baillieu Government’s $35 million cut to Swinburne’s TAFE operations.
