SOS Prahran Community Rally - 12 noon Wednesday 22 August
@Swinburne University of Technology, St John Street, Prahran (runs between Chapel & Thomas Streets)
Join staff, students and locals in a rally to save Swinburne University of Technology’s Prahran campus, currently home to the Faculty of Design, the National Institute of Circus Arts and a raft of courses including graphic, industrial and multimedia design, business, hospitality, creative and performing arts and social sciences.
Following the $300 million cuts to the TAFE budget by the Baillieu Government, Swinburne says it will relocate the Faculty of Design from Prahran to Hawthorn and the National Institute of Circus Arts says it will become a private education provider. The future of performing arts courses in Prahran is not guaranteed beyond 2013.
Enjoy a free sausage sizzle, some brief speeches at 12.30pm and then march to the office of local Liberal MP Clem Newton-Brown where he will be presented with a letter from the National Tertiary Education Union asking him to reverse the TAFE cuts and commit the Baillieu Government to not allowing the sale of the site.
Note: If you have been affected by the Government's TAFE cuts, please call talkback radio, write letters to the editor or contact your local MPs directly to ask them what they are doing to protect TAFE. We need to keep up this pressure.
The Save TAFE rallies are events for the whole community – staff, students, families, supporters. The rallies are being organised by the Australian Education Union NTEU and the local trades and labour councils are supporting them.
