Self-directed academic work
NTEU has recently needed to develop and represent an argument based on the premise that a component of academic work is self-directed. It arises following an assumption by senior managers that they could direct an academic who is properly performing all his directed work (teaching and administration associated with teaching and research) to not undertake certain self-directed work. The right to a component of self-directed work is seen in clauses 60.3, 60.4 and 60.5 of the Enterprise Agreement. There is also an intellectual freedom clause that is relevant at Clauses 10.2.2(c) and 10.2.3. If you have an interest in this issue or something you wish to raise, please contact Stan Rosenthal.
