Vic TAFE rally: Greens back protest in Melbourne and from Senate

Posted 19 September 2012 by Carmel Shute (NTEU National Office)

The Australian and Victorian Greens spokespeople on Higher Education are calling for the immediate restoration of funding lost to the Victorian TAFE system in the lead up to tomorrow’s expected bigMelbournerally against TAFE cuts at midday inTreasuryGardens.

Victorian Greens MP and education spokesperson Sue Pennicuik will be at the rally and Senator Lee Rhiannon plans to use tomorrow’s Senate Question Time to ask the Federal Skills Minister Chris Evans about Victoria’s TAFE system and what he will do to review and rescue the situation.

Australian Greens Higher Education spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said:

“While TAFE is being savagely attacked around the country,Victoria’s TAFE system is Australia’s poorest cousin - facing multi-million dollar cuts and crippled by VET contestability reforms.

“The time is well overdue for Minister Evans to intervene in the failures of the VET contestability model and increase federal funding to the TAFE sector. The Federal Labor government has a responsibility to take action as it created the conditions for state governments to strip resources out of TAFE.

“The Victorian TAFE system is Australia’s poster child for the failure of the VET contestability model which has privatised vocational education and training. Victorian TAFE’s market share in delivering VET courses dropped from 75 to 48.8 per cent between 2008 to 2011 while private providers gained 14 to 40 per cent,” Senator Rhiannon said.
