'Serenade' the ANU Council
Posted 24 May 2012 by Jane Maze (ACT Division)
Tonight at 7 pm there will be a musical vigil entitled 'Serenade' at University House while the ANU Council eats inside. Interestingly, Chancellor Gareth Evans has invited the School of Music String Quartet to come in out of the rain to play for Council at precisely 7.20 - just one item because 'they should not have to do a whole gig unpaid'. The performance will be played via speakers for the benefit of the protesters outside. Organisers have requested that supporters come wearing black, with candles, to 'show the Council just how serious we are'. For more information see http://www.facebook.com/events/294179507341301/

[ +1 ] It's good that the protests have been effective enough that the ANU in going into damage control - ie trying to quell and undermine the protests by inviting performers inside - but the VC who's ruining the school does not deserve a free performance! What's important is building on the support of the people outside, and preferably spreading that support amongst other ANU staff to side with the music teachers before their own jobs get cut as well. We could see where this was heading when the arts and music school libraries were merged, and before that when humanities courses were cut. If our plan is to wait around and respond to all the future attacks separately as they happen, we'll lose - we can see where this is heading and need to act together now. If the VC is sacking one lot of staff, staff in other areas need to take industrial action to stop it, it's the only way.
