Is your lecture or tutorial overcrowded? Let NTEU know

Overcrowdings of lectures and tutorials is a common complaint amongst university staff and students in the first few weeks of first semester.

This year inadequate funding per student combined with the uncapping of enrolments is likely to make matters worse. This will means more crowded and increase workloads for staff.

As part of our Invest in Australia’s Future campaign, over the coming weeks NTEU is asking university staff and students to report instances of overcrowding to the Union.

In particular, we want you to send us photographs of overcrowded university classes and/or tutorials you are teaching or attending.

Photographs can be sent to the following e-mail: overcrowded@nteu.org.au

Or you can post them directly to Twitter with the following hash tag #investinunis

Where possible, we would ask that all images be accompanied by:

The name of the institution where they are taken.
A very general description of the class, ie, ‘first year philosophy’ or whatever. It does not have to be too specific.

If you are e-mailing images make sure they are accompanied by your name. We won’t be making this information public but it would be useful if we need to follow up with the sender.

We will be posting a selection of pictures on the NTEU’s Invest in Australia’s Future website and using them to generate media interest in the issue of university under funding.

As such, the NTEU is also interested in know about any lecturers or students who are prepared to talk to the media about overcrowding. If you know of a particularly serious example of overcrowding and are prepared to talk to the media contact the Union’s National Media Officer, Andrew Nette at overcrowded@nteu.org.au
