The phrase “class warfare” has been thrown around a lot in the media and within political circles recently – usually without much basis.
But in Victoria it is very real; the current Liberal Government has declared open class warfare on the state’s workers through the drastic downsizing of publicly funded TAFE institutes.

The effect on Shepparton of a $300 million funding cut to TAFE institutes across Victoria remains unknown, with many still waiting to hear about potential impacts on jobs and courses.
Nevertheless, a rally today at Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE in Shepparton will protest the Victorian Government’s budget move last month.

GIPPSLAND'S TAFE sector could be presented with a glimmer of hope, according to Latrobe City Mayor Ed Vermeulen.
In a meeting with Latrobe City Council over recent funding cuts to the vocational training sector, State Skills Minister Peter Hall assured council he would "financially reexamine" issues associated with the cuts.

UP to 200 jobs could be slashed from the Box Hill Institute of TAFE as a result of state government funding cuts.
The TAFE’s chief executive, John Maddock (pictured), said the number of redundancies would be announced once the institute completed its analysis of how to absorb $24 million of lost government funds.

IF the Federal Government has not announced serious new job opportunities for the Latrobe Valley by September it faces a vocal union backlash.
That was the warning from Gippsland Trades and Labor Council on Thursday following the launch of another report on the Latrobe Valley's future, this time by State Higher Education and Skills Minister Peter Hall.

VICTORIAN funding cuts will decimate traineeships in the service industries and could breach contract law, according to a private college owner.
Nic Mardling, managing director of Melbourne-based Student Training Hospitality Services, said the state's budget changes would slash funding rates for training contracts still being fulfilled. He said his company would go "hell for leather" to complete its current traineeships by Christmas. "But if I can't, I'm going to be losing money on them," he said.

An equestrian centre that provides training to riders with a disability and the racing industry is under threat because of the Baillieu Government’s savage funding cuts to TAFEs, Shadow Minister for Racing Martin Pakula said today.
The Mt Rowan Equestrian Centre provides a permanent venue for the Riding for the Disabled Association and allows the University of Ballarat to provide specialised equine industry training courses for the benefit of the racing industry.

Victoria University is the biggest provider of education in the western suburbs. VU plays an important role in educating young and mature students, disadvantaged students and newly arrived ESL (English as a second language) students in the west.
VU provided me with a second chance at education and an opportunity to earn a professional qualification for the first time at the age of 40, so I know firsthand the benefits of TAFE.
No federal help for Ballarat TAFE, says Pyne

With dozens of Ballarat TAFE courses set to be axed due to state government funding cuts, unions can expect no assistance from the federal government according to a Coalition frontbencher.
Opposition spokesman for education Christopher Pyne visited Ballarat yesterday and was asked about the possibility of federal intervention to fill the TAFE funding black-hole.
“My understanding is that the cuts that have been made are as a result of mismanagement by the previous Labor government, who had an open ended approach to TAFE funding,” he said.

The revelation that Victorian VET funding cuts involve somewhat more than the $100 million publicly claimed by the state government is also revelatory of the government’s prosecution of the case for these swingeing cuts. After publicly recanting the misgivings that brought him to the brink of resignation, skills minister Peter Hall has, at times, resembled Comical Ali, as he argued for weeks that it was “too premature” to talk of job cuts and course closures, while all around him TAFE CEOs were lining up to announce job cuts and course closures. In Hall’s own electorate, the local GippsTAFE CEO Peter Whitney described himself as “enraged”, as he announced job cuts of of up to 25, with more to follow.

STUDENTS and teachers rallied in Shepparton today against funding cuts to TAFEs.
Shadow Minister for Skills and Apprenticeships, Steve Herbert, said the rally sent a clear message to Premier Ted Baillieu that funding cuts to TAFEs were hurting the region and would have serious consequences into the future.
