Union Awareness Week: my part in making a difference

26th - 30th October

Over the last 15 years the NTEU and it's members have been constantly striving to improve the working life of the ANU community. Whether it's the industrial advice we provide, the better pay, leave arrangements and conditions gained for all ANU staff, or the lobbying we have done on behalf of the higher education sector, NTEU members have made a significant difference at ANU.

During Union Awareness Week, the NTEU will be conducting a week of activities to help raise awareness and recognise the achievements of NTEU members at ANU over the past 15 years.

What's happening The ANU Branch of the NTEU is holding a Union Awareness Week next week beginning 26 October. The week is aimed at lifting the profile of the union by increasing the union's visibility on campus and informing staff of the role and achievements of union members over the past 15 years at ANU. The more visible we are as Union members, the more that other ANU staff will see being a Union Member as part of the ANU community.

In the recently negotiated Enterprise Agreement, the NTEU was successful in winning many improvements in conditions and pay for sessional academic staff. Casual Academics' Campaign

A key priority of the NTEU is to improve the lot of casual employees. In 2007-8, NTEU is running a national campaign on casual academic employment with these two objectives: improving conditions directly and ensuring universities provide opportunities for casuals to attain more secure jobs.

NTEU has created a new website, www.unicasual.com.au, so you can easily access a wide range of information you need about employment as a casual.

Casual Academics' Conferences
NTEU will hold a National Casuals' Conference and a series of Division Casuals' Conferences this year as a focus for consultation with casual members on how to improve their working conditions and career paths. The ACT Division Conference will be held on Monday 4 June from 11 am to 3.30 pm in the Meeting Room at University House. Lunch and drinks will be provided. If you would like to know more about the conference, please contact Jane Maze at jmaze@nteu.org.au.

Casual Membership
Casual staff can join NTEU for a nominal fee and get the full range of membership services. These include individual assistance with problems in the workplace and the opportunity to have input to what is in your Enterprise Agreement.

Members also get a wide range of extra benefits including discounted health insurance, loans, computers, travel, shopping, and legal and financial advice. You can download a Casual membership form here.

Casuals' employment conditions at ANU
Casual Sessional Academic Staff employment conditions This document outlines a policy agreed between NTEU and ANU on conditions and reasonable workloads for casual academic staff in the Faculty of Arts. In 2008 we will be seeking to have similar conditions included in the Enterprise Agreement, to extend coverage to all casual academic staff and improve enforceability. Please contact the NTEU Office at 6125 2043 if you need help negotiating about your workload or conditions.
