Survey: Outsourcing of general staff roles

Survey: Outsourcing of general staff roles

The University of Canberra is exploring options for outsourcing a large number of jobs and has begun discussing them with affected staff. Areas proposed for outsourcing are Maintenance, Ground staff, Stores, Mailroom, ICT, and Finance.

NTEU has discussed the proposal with management and raised serious objections to it. There has also been considerable critical debate about it on UC Chat.

The Union is currently considering making a submission to the UC Council, who will ultimately decide whether to outsource UC jobs.

Your comments will be valuable in helping determine what the NTEU's line on this issue should be, and in making a detailed case to management and Council about how to proceed in a way that is best for UC.

Please cut and paste the short survey below into an email to actdiv@nteu.org.au, fill it in and send it.

All UC staff are welcome to complete this survey.

Survey

1. Do you support the current outsourcing proposal?
Please put an X next to the response that best sums up your view:

Strongly support

2. Do you work in one of the areas proposed for outsourcing?

If Yes:   How do you think outsourcing will affect the work quality and efficiency of your area?
If No:  Is outsourcing in the proposed areas likely to have an effect on you or your department? What effect?

Casual Academics' Campaign

A key priority of the NTEU is to improve the lot of casual employees. In 2007-8, NTEU is running a national campaign on casual academic employment with these two objectives: improving conditions directly and ensuring universities provide opportunities for casuals to attain more secure jobs.

NTEU has created a new website, www.unicasual.com.au, so you can easily access a wide range of information you need about employment as a casual.

Casual Academics' Conferences
NTEU will hold a National Casuals' Conference and a series of Division Casuals' Conferences this year as a focus for consultation with casual members on how to improve their working conditions and career paths. The ACT Division Conference will be held on Monday 4 June from 11 am to 3.30 pm in the Meeting Room at University House. Lunch and drinks will be provided. If you would like to know more about the conference, please contact Jane Maze at jmaze@nteu.org.au.

Casual Membership
Casual staff can join NTEU for a nominal fee and get the full range of membership services. These include individual assistance with problems in the workplace and the opportunity to have input to what is in your Enterprise Agreement.

Members also get a wide range of extra benefits including discounted health insurance, loans, computers, travel, shopping, and legal and financial advice. You can download a Casual membership form here.
