OUR UNIVERSITIES MATTER CAMPAIGN

The NTEU is campaigning during 2008 to reinvigorate Australia's Universities under the banner "Our Universities Matter - Investing in People and Society".  The Campaign's aims include:

  • Achieving higher levels of government funding and better funding mechanisms.
  • Protecting University independence and freedom of inquiry.
  • Controls on excessive workloads, better job security and a competitive pay rise for University staff.
  • Affordable education and improved student services.

This Campaign includes:

  • A Charter for University Renewal - A Statement of underlying principles on the future shape and direction of the higher education sector.
  • Collective Bargaining - In 2008 NTEU is negotiating with University management for a new Collective Agreement, including pay rises and improved staff conditions.
  • A Discrete Universities Act - A legislative framework which clearly defines Universities' roles and responsibilities.
  • Statement on Academic Freedom and University Independence - NTEU is seeking to protect academic freedom and University Independence through legislation, as is done in many other countries.
  • Casual & Sessional Staff - NTEU is seeking better pay and conditions for casual and sessional staff.
  • Research Staff - NTEU is giving priority to the needs of contract research staff.
  • General Staff Classification & Promotion - NTEU is seeking clearer, comprehensive and objective general staff classification and promotion procedures.
  • University Funding - "What happened to the clever country?" - Australia is the only OECD country where expenditure on tertiary education as a share of GDP has fallen since 1995.  We now spend less on tertiary education than the OECD average and have one of the lowest levels of public investment.
  • Keeping University Salaries competitive - A 27% salary increase is needed over the next three years to keep salaries in line with other sectors and to ensure we stay internationally competitive.
  • University Workloads need regulation - NTEU is seeking clear and substantive regulation of workloads.
  • Finding a balance between work and home - NTEU is seeking a better work-life balance for all University staff.
  • Job Security - Collective Bargaining is our opportunity to regain security conditions stripped by the previous Federal Government.
  • Indigenous Employment - NTEU's Indigenous specific clauses in Collective Bargaining help combat diminished educational and employment opportunities.
  • Regional Communities need strong Universities.
  • Towards environmentally sustainable Universities - Universities are important environmental researchers and leaders in developing solutions to climate change.
  • NATIONAL PETITION - National Petition calls on the Federal Government to improve University funding; improve access to Universities; and legislate to protect academic freedom and institutional autonomy.

SIGN THE PETITION - AND BE INVOLVED - Go to the website and sign the national Petition:

COLLECTIVE BARGAINING IN 2008

Collective Bargaining negotiations are now underway at Flinders University.

The NTEU and University have exchanged documents outlining the basis for their proposals for collective bargaining.  The Union is pleased to see that many NTEU initiatives are contained within the University's proposals for collective bargaining.  The NTEU believes that these shared goals are an excellent basis for negotiations.

Details of negotiations are contained in the Branch Newsletters and E-Bulletins below.  Also, the NTEU's Background Paper to its Log of Claims for Collective Bargaining is available below.

The NTEU Collective Bargaining Team is:

Academic - Michael Brunger and Eileen Willis

General Staff - Carol Gibb and Ron Slee
