I have had a long-term interest in retirement income  policy.  My PhD thesis focussed on the adequacy of US social insurance benefits and private pensions. Since taking up the Chair in Social Work and Social Policy in 2000, I have published papers on various aspects of the “economics of ageing” including the impacts of globalization on superannuation and an “assessment” of Australia’s retirement income system.

With regard to UniSuper, I am particularly concerned to ensure that the employer contributions remains at 17 per cent, the contribution level which, over a working lifetime, is required to generate an adequate retirement income. I am also committed to helping ensure that UniSuper carefully manages the risks associated with Australia’s privatized path to providing retirement incomes and further invests in its information support services for members.
