Why join the NTEU?

Membership of the NTEU Tasmanian Division is open to virtually any member of staff of the University of Tasmania and the Australian Maritime College (there are a very few exceptions, which the Division office can explain).

The NTEU is not just an 'academics' union.  General staff are more than a third of the NTEU membership.

Unions are the only organisations seriously questioning the onward rush towards greater and greater 'rationalisation' of Higher Education, with reduced funding and tougher times for both staff and students, and greater ease of access to an education for those already privileged.

The NTEU is demonstrably the most effective union operating in Higher Education.  NTEU-negotiated industrial agreements almost always produce better pay and protection of conditions than those negotiated by other unions.  It is also the main media voice for higher education staff in Australia.

The NTEU charges a membership fee directly proportional to the ability to pay - the same percentage of pay for all members of a Branch or Division.  The current fee for Tasmanian Division members is 1% of (gross) salary, which is very moderate by national standards.  Casual staff pay a much reduced fee, dependent on their income band - a maximum of $110 a year, or $55 for 6 months.

There are also a number of benefits members enjoy such as (limited) free legal advice and discounts on consumer items.
