University of South Australia Branch

Welcome to the University of South Australia Branch of the NTEU, located near the City East Campus on Paxton's Walk on the Ground Floor of the Palais Apartments, 281 North Terrace.

The NTEU's main aims are to represent, protect and assist members in industrial matters at a National, State and institutional level.

The University of South Australia Branch has representatives at each campus and on several University committees. Most importantly, the NTEU is the  foremost staff representative in Enterprise Bargaining negotiations.

The University of South Australia NTEU Office provides members with easy access to industrial expertise from the Branch Office Staff who, because they work exclusively with and for University staff, intimately understand local issues and conditions of employment.

Industrial action update

Dear Colleagues,

The NTEU met with the University of South Australia’s representatives in Fair Work Australia before Senior Deputy President O’Callaghan yesterday in a hearing of the University management’s application for an “Order to Suspend or Terminate Protected Industrial Action”.

SDP O’Callaghan has issued an order this afternoon that requires the NTEU to suspend all industrial action for a period of two weeks commencing from 5 pm (4 December). This order and the clauses that show his rationale are attached for your information.

The order means that the ban on the transmission of assessment and exam results is temporarily suspended (for two weeks).

The Union is planning to appeal the Decision.

Members will already be aware that in most cases the University requires that these assessment results be handed in by close-of-business on Tuesday 8 December 2009. Nothing in the Order changes this.

Other protected action is also suspended for 2 weeks.

It is worth noting that the decision made by SDP O’Callaghan is a temporary suspension for 2 weeks, not a month as requested by management.

Most importantly, the SDP “{I] emphatically reject the implication that negotiations over the duration of 2009 are making good progress” and further notes that an “average delay…of 21 months from the expiry of one agreement to the making of another…is an undesirable statistic which goes some distance to explain the frustration which leads to protected industrial action.”

SDP O’Callaghan’s final comment that should FWA be required to assist in expediting the negotiation process, he “would require a clear commitment from the USA Vice Chancellor’s office, that the University is committed to expediting an agreement”.

Please be assured that the NTEU will continue to work on behalf of our members. Thank you all for your ongoing support.

Yours in solidarity,

Kevin Rouse

NTEU Branch President (Acting)

How To Join

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Fees are set as a percentage of salary; that means you pay in proportion to your ability to contribute.  The fee for each member, excluding casuals, is divided between the Branch, Division, and National levels of the Union.

At the University of SA Branch the fee is 1% of salary. For instance, if you are on a salary of $45,000 per annum, then your union membership fee will be approximately $8.65 per week. Union fees are tax deductible.

CASUAL FEES
Annual earnings              6th month fee         Annual fee
$10,000 and under          $27.50                   $55.00
$10,001 - $20,000          $38.50                   $77,00
Over $20,000                 $55.00                  $110.00

HOW TO PAY
The easiest way to pay your union dues is by direct debit from a nominated bank account, or by credit card or direct invoice. These methods are preferred to payroll deductions, as the University has advised of its decision to charge a fee for payroll deductions, and they give the university less control and member information. However, at this stage you may still choose to pay by payroll deduction if you wish.

Membership forms can be downloaded from this site. Fill out the form and return it to the Branch.

The NTEU will continue the campaign during 2009 to reinvigorate Australia’s universities under the banner of Our Universities Matter – Investing in People and Society. The campaign’s aims include:

All 39 Australian public universities will negotiate new Collective Agreements during 2008–09, which will set salary levels and employment conditions for staff for the next three years.

The campaign will link our Collective Bargaining directly with the broader public discussions about the higher education sector’s future.

For more information on the campaign go to www.ouruniversitiesmatter.com.au.
