Child care petition
To the Vice-Chancellor, Senior Executive Team and members of University Council at UNSW.
We the undersigned are concerned at the news that a decision has been made to cut the budgets of the three UNSW childcare centres, which will result in a decrease in the numbers and qualifications of childcare centre staff.
We believe that this decision:
- Is short-sighted, given the likelihood of increased government funding to UNSW over the next two to three years.
- Will have a disproportionate and negative impact on the quality and availability of childcare services to staff and students at UNSW.
- Runs contrary to current Federal government policy direction on quality childcare services.
- Will further exacerbate the level of unmet need for childcare at UNSW.
We call on you to urgently reconsider this decision.

Wed 16 Sept Strike - Picket Protocols
Members of the NTEU, the Union for all University staff, voted in a secret ballot for protected industrial action in the form of a 24 hour strike on Wednesday 16th September. The legitimate role of a picket line is to communicate information to staff, students, passers-by and visitors to the University of the reasons for the taking of industrial action.
Unions NSW has called on all affiliates to support the NTEU, a motion which was carried unanimously at council. Unions ACT endorses the strike action and pickets being taken by the NTEU in support of their legitimate bargaining claims at UNSW/ADFA to be held on 16 September 2009. Unions ACT will advise affiliates not to take any action that will undermine the NTEU's action.
The ABCs of Picket Duty
l Aim is to communicate information to staff, students, passers-by and visitors to the University of the reasons for taking strike action.
l Be aware of speeding cars, personal safety of picketers should be the utmost consideration at all times! The NTEU has informed local police command of the action.
l Come and enjoy a positive collective experience!
¡ Gate Captains for each picket: First point of contact for any questions/ Will explain picket protocols

| Strike FAQs | Following on from member queries regarding notification requirements for industrial action and by way of clarifying earlier emails from the Vice Chancellor to all UNSW staff (on Friday 4th September), the University has confirmed that NTEU members have no legal requirement to advise their supervisor in advance if they are going to be on strike on the 16th. The University requests members to fill in an industrial action form by the 23rd September, 2009. Provided you return the form by this date then there are no adverse consequences. |
