Role of Delegates

Without limiting the potential range of tasks, the responsibilities of Workplace Delegates may include:

Communication:

  • Distributing NTEU material (by hand and email) to staff in your area;
  • Liaising with the Branch, including providing feedback and information on workplace issues which may arise from time to time;
  • Facilitation of local workplace Union meetings incl. organising venues, distributing notices, etc.

 Recruitment & Organising:

  • One-to-one contact with members and potential members in your work unit, ensuring new staff are asked to join the Union;
  • Contacting local members about Branch General Meetings and campaign activities;
  • Workplace ‘mapping’ and assisting the Branch with tracking staff movements;
  • Assisting local and national union-building campaigns in the workplace (eg. Direct dues payments, Bargaining Agent sign-ons, community and union solidarity).

Representation on Industrial matters:

  • As a Delegate, you will be the first point of contact for workplace issues. Members with issues will be encouraged to contact their workplace Delegate first (except where not appropriate);
  • Providing initial advice to members, and referring members on to the Branch Office for more complex matters;
  • Accompanying members to meetings with local Management (where authorised by the Branch and after appropriate training);
  • Identifying collective issues in the Work Unit and organising around them with the assistance of the Branch.

The NTEU’s commitment to you:

  • Delivery of a variety of training and development sessions for Delegates;
  • Regular contact with and mentoring of workplace Delegates by a dedicated Branch Industrial Organiser;
  • A regular Delegates email newsletter and local meetings of Delegates
  • Resources, including a comprehensive Delegates’ kit including a handbook, sign for your door; and other relevant information;
  • Formal accreditation of your delegate status via a letter from the Branch President;
  • Official correspondence from the Branch advising your Supervisor of your Delegate’s accreditation;
  • Appropriate arrangements with Management to ensure your rights are protected;
  • Vigorous defence against any form of disadvantage or victimisation you may encounter in connection with your activities as an NTEU Delegate,
  • Access to the Annual NSW Delegates’ Conference providing an opportunity for Delegates to meet, exchange experiences and learn new skills.
