Eden-Monaro

As at 19 October the declared candidates for the electorate of Eden-Monaro are:

Matthew Chivers - Christian Democratic Party

Keith Hughes- Greens

I was the first Greens Councillor in the region when elected to the Bega Valley Shire Council in 2002 and re-elected in 2004.

As well, I am a tutor at the University of Wollongong Bega campus, a member of the NTEU and a campaigner for environmental issues, especially the forests.

The big issue for me and The Greens is climate change. This election is a chance to put forward some genuine and practical solutions.

A strong showing for The Greens increases the pressure on the Liberal and Labor Parties to adopt real policies now instead of their "clean coal" and nuclear which are pie in the sky or worse.

The Greens are the only party committed to tearing up WorkChoices.

The only way to overturn this draconian law is a strong presence of The Greens in the Senate.

Mike Kelly - Australian Labor Party

This election is about the future, and this election is about who can deliver new leadership for Australia’s future.

Local people tell me despite a booming economy, the majority of local working families struggle to make ends meet as they face increasing grocery bills, higher petrol prices and huge mortgages. They are worried about job security under John Howard’s unfair workplace laws and the lack of affordable housing.

After 11 years in power Mr Howard is stale and has lost touch with working families. Kevin Rudd’s has fresh ideas to tackle the nation’s future challenges like climate change, hospitals and education, and has a long-term plan to take Australia forward over the next 10 years.

Eden-Monaro needs new leadership.

I look forward to this campaign as an opportunity to highlight Kevin Rudd’s plans for the future.
