UOW Sustainability Agenda
Your Union has been taking an increasing interest in environmental sustainability/carbon reduction issues across the higher education sector. We recognise the need (and strategic position) for universities to take action and community leadership on climate change issues.
On Wednesday 13 August 2008, NTEU representatives welcomed an opportunity to attend the University’s sustainability forum. It was pleasing to see so many members and student in attendance.
Your Union supports university management’s attempts to progress sustainability initiatives and we support many of the initiatives which were presented at this forum.
HOWEVER, we say the UOW sustainability agenda should not be delivered unilaterally and without the active engagement of NTEU membership. We recognise that our members have a strong interest and commitment in any measures which are designed to reduce the University’s carbon emissions. Similarly, we recognise our members’ interest in measures which will produce a healthier and more sustainable university workplace.
Your Union has subsequently approached University management seeking your active involvement in any committees (eg, environmental advisory committee) working parties etc which are established to progress the sustainability agenda. We are saying to management that without your active participation, the sustainability agenda will falter, opportunities will be missed and a raft of strategies will not be implemented.
In short, we must shape this sustainability agenda to ensure it reflects the thinking and ideas of our membership. If you are interested in representing NTEU in relation to sustainability issues please contact the Branch Office.
