CASUAL ACADEMICS' RIGHTS @ WORK

If you are a casual academic at UTS, read the following "checklist" of your basic rights and answer "yes" or "no" against each question.

1. Have you been provided with a contract that specifies your duties, the amount of time expected for each, the appropriate rates of pay, and the position of your supervisor?

2. Are you being paid for attendance at your colleagues’ lectures or classes or workplace meetings that you are expected to attend?

3. Does your contract specify sufficient hours for the marking involved as part of your duties?

4. Have the expectations of levels of preparation, marking and feedback, and student consultation been explained to you?

5. If you are performing duties normally performed by subject coordinators (e.g. preparation of subject outlines, subject readers, subject administration) are you being paid extra for this at the subject coordination pay rate?

6. Are you clear about how to interpret your contract?

7. Are you aware of your entitlement to apply for support in career development activities?

8. Do you have access to office space (shared or unshared)?

9. Do you have an appropriate area for student consultation?

10. Do you have access to photocopying facilities, a telephone, a location for receiving mail, and appropriate computer facilities?

11. Do you have access to a UTS email account?

12. Do you have a UTS Library card?

13. Do you regularly receive information about the university’s contributions to your superannuation?

14. Do you feel part of the academic community at UTS?

15. Are you satisfied with your pay and conditions as a casual academic?

16. Are you confident about getting future work at UTS?

17. Do you think the current pattern and conditions of casual academic employment should continue?

18. Do you feel that you can negotiate improved conditions and pay on your own?

If you answered "No" to one or more of the questions, you should attend one of the meetings planned for all casual academics at UTS.
