NTEU Casuals tell us the issues
A national NTEU survey of casual academics in 2007 found:
65% of respondents said they were not "satisfied with the pay and conditions of employment for casual academics".
36% said that the University does not provide the necessary facilities and resources to do their work.
32% said that they were provided with no training or induction to support them in their work, and where it is provided, 41% was not paid.
51% did not feel part of the life of the faculty/academic area where they work.
The survey confirmed what many have been saying: that casuals are not paid for all the hours of work they do.
If you have similar concerns you should attend one of the upcoming meetings of casual academic staff. Casual academic members of the NTEU-UTS Branch will be setting a campaign agenda for collectively negotiating improvements to:
• Pay and conditions
• Career development opportunities
• Voice and recognition in the academy
