If you are too sick to work -
superannuation disability benefits are available under most of the superannuation schemes to which NTEU members belong.
* If you are too sick to work, and you are running out of sick leave, your employer should advise you about how to apply for a disability benefit.
* Some schemes pay a temporary benefit for up to two years. That is, you do not have to be permanently incapacitated to receive a benefit.
* The benefit you may receive is paid in the form of a pension or a lump sum, depending on the scheme. Most often it will be a pension based on a percentage of your salary.
* To receive a superannuation benefit you need only to show that you are too sick to work. Unlike WorkCover, you do not have to show a relationship between your illness and your job.
* Most schemes take at least two months to determine an application for a disability benefit.
* It is important to lodge your claim early enough to allow time for a decision to be made before your sick leave finishes, to avoid being without an income.
* If you are receiving workers compensation (WorkCover) you should inquire about lodging a claim at least two months before your make up pay ceases. In some schemes - UniSuper is one - if you do not do this your retirement benefits will be reduced.
For advice or assistance about lodging your claim, contact the NTEU.
