stories of feminist activists who took an active role in the WLM in

HUMAN RIGHTS IN SOUTH AFRICA TODAY
One of South Africa’s leading human rights lawyers, George Bizos,
is touring Australia to present public lectures on human rights in
pre-and post-apartheid South Africa. His tour is timely given 2010
marks the 20th anniversary of the release of Nelson Mandela from
prison. George Bizos is a renowned human rights lawyer who has had
a long association with Nelson Mandela. Bizos was also part of the
team which defended Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki and

BURMA FILMS SCREENING WITH GUEST SPEAKER MR TOE ZAW

nominated documentary 2010. Armed with pocket-sized video cameras,
a tenacious band of Burmese reporters face down death to expose the
repressive regime controlling their country. 1.30pm-3pm,
Orphans of Burma’s Cyclone – (50mins) Filmed covertly over
the course of a year by two Burmese cameramen, who risked an
instant 30-year jail sentence if caught, Orphans of Burma's
Cyclone exposes the official intransigence of one of the
world's most brutal and secretive regimes andreveals what
day-to-day life is like for the ordinary people of Burma. Toe Zaw
Latt is the Bureau Chief for Democratic Voice of Burma in Thailand.
He is responsible for coordinating underground video journalists
who contributed footage for both films, and for producing a daily
TV & radio program for broadcast via satellite to Burma.

InspirActivism is a youth activist training program run by the
SEARCH Foundation. The program aims to network and support young
activists, and connect them with ‘veteran’ activists who have
participated in significant Australian campaigns and movements. The
program is participatory and includes campaign case studies and

Award-winning radio
documentary producer Colm McNaughton @ Underground Talk. He will be
discussing his experiences and investigations that inform his
forthcoming piece La Frontera: a journey into the borderlands
of Mexico and the United States. This doco will be played on
Saturday 3 April in the 360 slot on ABC Radio National. La
Frontera attempts to grasp and at some level explain the
complexity of what is going on in Mexican society by
examining different aspects such as free trade, migration,
militarization, the war on drugs and the narcos, the killing of

DEAD MEN WALKING: VISITING DEATH ROW IN THE DEEP
SOUTH
Lizzie O'Shea @ Underground Talk. Lizzie spent four months
working on behalf of prisoners facing execution without legal
representation in Louisiana. Capital punishment represents a
indictment of a society which has a decimated social welfare
system, where it is politically advantageous to throw poor people
in the social rubbish heap which is the prison system. The human
rights implications of the policy are damning, but establishing a
campaign around the issue from a human rights perspective is
