Base Funding Review

The Federal Government has announced a Higher Education Base Funding Review. In October 2010, the Minister for Tertiary Education, Senator Chris Evans, formally announced the Review, to be chaired by Dr Jane Lomax-Smith (former SA Education Minister). Background and consultation papers were released in December 2010, and the final report is due in October 2011 (see www.deewr.gov.au/BaseFundingReview).

The focus on funding arises from the Federal Government’s response to Bradley Review of Higher Education, the ‘Transforming Australia’s Higher Education System’ package, released in May 2009. Part of that package was a commitment to commission a review of the base funding levels for learning and teaching in higher education to ensure that funding levels remain internationally competitive and appropriate for the sector.
