Casual Members Meeting
The working conditions of casual employees, and the need for more secure jobs, are important issues for the NTEU and the broader union movement. The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) is running a major campaign on these issues this year.
As part of this, unions are asking casual staff to talk about how it affects their lives to be employed in this way. The Howe Inquiry, currently holding hearings all around the country, has been set up for casual staff to speak about this.
The information and ideas that the Inquiry gathers will inform the ACTU's campaign, as well as raising visibility for the issues in the media and the awareness of policy makers.
Several casual NTEU members have already agreed to talk to the Howe Inquiry, and I will speak also.
More speakers from among casual university staff would be welcome.
The Howe Inquiry is holding a Canberra hearing from 10-4 on Wednesday March 7th at the Griffin Centre, 20 Genge St, Civic. Please reply to this email if you would like us to arrange for you to speak. Lunch will be provided.
We would also like to invite all ACT casual university staff to a lunchtime meeting at the NTEU office on ANU campus, so you can talk to some of the people who will be presenting at the Inquiry. Your stories will add to the strength and concreteness of what we say in this important forum.
Please come to the NTEU office between 12.30 and 1.30 on Monday 5th March to discuss with your fellow casuals the issues affecting you.
Sandwiches and juice will be provided, so please reply letting us know whether you will be coming. (Don't be put off coming if you forgot to RSVP, though - we want to hear from you.)
