NTEU Media Release: Staff concerns force changes to ERA
Today’s announcement by Minister Kim Carr, outlining significant changes to the way the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) assessment works, will be welcomed by the majority of Australian researchers.
“The NTEU has communicated the very real concerns of its members about various aspects of the ERA and, in particular, the journal rankings to the ARC and to Minister Carr,” stated Jeannie Rea, NTEU National President.
“Today’s announcement by Senator Carr shows that he is not only listening to genuine concerns about the undesirable impacts of the ERA but more importantly he is prepared to implement action to overcome them.”
“Dropping the controversial ERA journal rankings will be a great relief to many researchers, especially those whose research has a strong interdisciplinary, Indigenous, public policy or local community focus. Nonetheless, university staff will need to remain vigilant about other ways in which ERA has been inappropriately used.”
Jeannie Rea concluded, “We look forward to further discussion, especially with the ARC, in finding ways to improve the way the ERA deals with multidisciplinary and Indigenous research.”
