NTEU media release: Staff winning the fight against job cuts at the University of Sydney

Posted 7 May 2012 by Andrew Nette (NTEU National Office)

The campaign to save jobs at the University of Sydney is having a big impact, with management drastically scaling back its plan for staff redundancies, the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) said on Monday.

“In November 2011, the University’s management announced plans to make 150 academics redundant,” said Michael Thomson, President of the University of Sydney Branch of the NTEU.

“On Friday the Vice-Chancellor emailed just staff announcing 23 staff members will be made redundant.”

“The University management don’t know their institution.”

“They got the forecast growth in student numbers wrong, they got the infrastructure needs wrong and they decided to bring artificial retrospective performance criteria.”

“They don’t understand the work staff do or how much of it they are doing.”

“They have damaged the University’s reputation.”

“The NTEU will continue to campaign for the 23 staff who will be receiving letters today.”

“ These job cuts are wrong, the management of the University have made mistakes and now they expect staff to pay.  We won’t.”

The NTEU and students will be lobbying the University of Sydney Senate meeting this afternoon.
