NTEU letter to management re staff poll on Single Agreement

Posted 2 July 2012 by Emma Clancy (Curtin University of Technology)

NTEU Curtin Branch President Jan Sinclair-Jones wrote to Vice President of Corporate Services Ian Callahan on June 29 2012 to request that the University and the NTEU jointly conduct a poll of staff members to determine staff views in relation to a Single Enterprise Agreement. The letter is published below.

Mr Ian Callahan,

Vice President Corporate Services

Curtin University

Dear Mr Callahan,

I refer to my email of 21 June 2012 addressed to Mr William Ryan about the need to resolve the clearly evident differences between the parties on the issue of one versus two agreements. I also note that this matter was discussed in the bargaining negotiations held on 28 June 2012.

The NTEU believes that the easiest, quickest and fairest way to resolve this question is to jointly conduct a poll of all staff to determine their preference for a single Enterprise Agreement rather than separate Academic Staff and General Staff Agreement for Curtin employees.

We therefore propose as a matter of urgency that a poll be held to determine the views of all employees. We further propose that the poll be held on the following basis:

  1. The poll be conducted and supervised by an organisation or individuals genuinely at arms’ length from the University and unions.
  2. That the University and the unions be given an equal opportunity to distribute a statement to all employees putting the arguments for and against one or two agreement(s).
  3. That there be at least two jointly organised and sponsored fora to which all staff be invited to hear verbal arguments for and against one or two agreement(s) and to answer any questions on this matter.
  4. That the parties agree to share equally the cost of running the poll.

As this matter is clearly an impediment to the efficient conduct and progress of bargaining, we request that the University give urgent consideration to this proposal and respond in writing to this letter by no later than Wednesday 4 July 2012.

Yours Sincerely

Jan Sinclair-Jones

NTEU Curtin Branch President
