ACTU launches â€œguiding principlesâ€ for pollution price implementation

ACTU President Ged Kearney today launched the union movement’s "guiding principles" for implementing a price on pollution through the proposed carbon tax.

Ms Kearney said that unions believe the design of a price on pollution must include support for emission-intensive trade-exposed industries, measures to protect existing jobs, programs to attract investment in clean energy and production, and assistance to low income households.

The launch included announcing the results of a survey which shows that two-thirds of Australians want the Government to use revenue from the proposed price on carbon to compensate households for any flow-on costs.

The poll also finds a clear majority back support to communities and industries by protecting jobs during the adjustment to a low-carbon economy. But they draw the line at compensating big polluters for loss of profits.

ACTU President Ged Kearney will be the keynote speaker at NTEU’s conference on climate change, “Pushing The Boundaries”, to be held on 28 – 29 April at 120 Clarendon St Sth Melbourne.
