TAFE colleges in Victoria have been hit by $100 million of budget cuts and say the most vulnerable in the community will be affected.

TONY JONES, PRESENTER: TAFE colleges in Victoria are bracing for harsh times after the Baillieu Government announced $100 million worth of cuts, with hundreds of jobs and courses likely to be lost in the wake of the recent budget.
The State Government says it's tailoring TAFE to industry needs, but regional communities, teachers and students say it's targeting the most vulnerable in the community.

What has taken many years for some without much success the Baillieu Government has done in a matter of weeks.
The State Government's cuts to TAFE in the May Budget have put vocational training front and centre of public attention; all the while demonstrating a surprisingly deep well of public regard for these educational institutions.

Minister meets with Ballarat university reps over TAFE cuts

UNIVERSITY of Ballarat representatives yesterday told Federal Skills Minister Chris Evans proposed TAFE cuts would have a devastating impact on the community.
Yesterday in Melbourne, Mr Evans met with education unions and TAFE teachers affected by the Victorian government’s proposed $300 million cuts, which he said would seemore than 550 Victorian jobs lost by July.
Training cuts threat to 7000 jobs

ALMOST 7000 jobs will be lost in Victoria and $400 million cut from vocational training in the wake of the state government budget cuts, projections from private and public colleges show.
The Australian Council for Private Education and Training has warned that its members would shed up to 20 per cent or 4800 of their 24,000-strong Victorian workforce as a result of last month's cuts.

Geelong Rally Makes It Clear – Cuts To TAFE Not Okay
Nearly a thousand students and teachers in Geelong today sent a clear message to Premier Ted Baillieu that his funding cuts to TAFEs are hurting the region and will have serious consequences into the future, Shadow Minister for Skills and Apprenticeships Steve Herbert said.
A range of union and student groups today held a rally at The Gordon Institute of TAFE – one of a series of rallies to be held across the state against the $290 million cuts to TAFEs by the Baillieu Government.

Geelong fury over TAFE cutbacks
The BAILLIEU government has ripped $300-million from the TAFE budget in a move that will cost thousands of teaching and admin jobs, force the scrapping of hundreds of courses and see the cost of training soar.
Much of the money will be diverted to private sector providers, which have been heavily criticised for providing sub-standard training and for running courses in only the most lucrative of fields.
Geelong’s Gordon TAFE has already announced course closures and dozens of jobs are expected to go.

Vocational training concerns

CONCERNS over the future of Gippsland's vocational training sector were raised by education providers at an annual Australian College of Educators meeting.
The meeting which was held at the central Gippsland Institute of TAFE's Waratah training restaurant coincided with State Skills Minister Peter Hall's response to the Gippsland Tertiary Education Plan.

The Western Futures course teaches independent living and work skills for young people with intellectual disabilities at the Footscray campus.

Mr LIM (Clayton) — I rise to lament the Baillieu government’s savage $290 million cuts to our TAFE system, which will cost 2000 jobs and hundreds of courses. The Victorian economy is going backwards under this government. We have a skills shortage and need to be providing more training opportunities. TAFE campuses in Victoria play an extremely important role in providing opportunities for Victorians to up‑skill, to further their education or to gain a trade certificate so they can access more highly skilled and better paid jobs.
