General Staff

ARE YOU A GENERAL STAFF WORKER?
Then the NTEU is the union for you
..
NTEU is the
only union working exclusively in the tertiary education
sector and with 26,000 members, including 10,000 general staff, it is the largest general staff
union in higher education.
We are also the only union in higher education to have a staffed office on all major university campuses, giving our members unequalled access to industrial advice and assistance.

Industrial Representation
Because NTEU works exclusively in your industry, NTEU
Industrial staff know and understand these and other issues and problems specific to general staff
work areas such as libraries, laboratories, student services, administration and
computing.
NTEU recognises the particular pressures general staff have felt over
the past few years with ongoing staff reductions, lack of career progression, ever increasing
workloads and in many cases, dealing with continual workplace change.
NTEU can provide
advice, support, representation and protection on many aspects of your employment
including:
- wages and conditions,
- classification and evaluation issues,
- access to staff development,
- performance management
- workloads,
- disciplinary and dismissal issues,
- redeployment and redundancy.
In the third round of Enterprise Bargaining (1999-2002), NTEU delivered pay increases of between 12 - 15% over three years for its members. In the current round of Enterprise Bargaining, some of the issues being pursued include regulation of workloads, improved classification processes, managing change, parental leave and job security.
Professional Representation
Professional issues are central to general staff as well as other workers in the tertiary education sector. NTEU will continue to take up issues of direct relevance and importance to the work of general staff including:
- campaigning to protect university funding
- professional development
- career progression
- defending and promoting members rights in areas such as:
- the introduction of new technology,
- intellectual property,
- quality assurance issues
Membership Involvement in Decision Making
The structure of the NTEU allows members to participate and have input at university, state and national levels through a range of member-based committees and forums.
Within that structure, general staff have guaranteed representation at all levels of the union to ensure decisions reflect their concerns and issues.
