Research Staff

The NTEU is the specialist higher education union for research staff working in universities, private research organisations, and government-funded research centres and institutes.  The NTEU can represent you, regardless of whether you are employed as general or academic staff.

The NTEU is working with you...

NTEU offers research staff professional representation:

  • NTEU’s Research Policy Committee comprises members who are actively involved in the development of NTEU responses to Commonwealth Government research policy.
  • NTEU liaises closely with groups such as the Federation of Australian Scientific and Technological Societies (FASTS), the Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations (CAPA), the Learned Academies, as well as making submissions to the Australian Research Council (ARC), the National Health & Medical Reseach Council (NH&MRC), and the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST).

NTEU recognises that as research staff you face particular issues due to the specific nature of your work.  We offer research staff industrial advice and assistance – our industrial staff have a great deal of experience in dealing with issues relevant to research staff and are working hard to improve salaries, working conditions, career progression and access to staff development.

Why NTEU is the best union to represent research staff

Over the past two years the NTEU has consulted widely with research staff to address issues and develop claims in 2003 Enterprise Bargaining Round:
Job and financial security
That an institution establish Research Staff Salary Supplementation Fund to fund any salary shortfalls in research grants.
Employment continuity and conditions
That an institution provides for improved job security and recognition of entitlements (such as recognition of prior service, superannuation, access to professional development) which would otherwise be lost due to interrupted nature of service.
Recognition of other  academic duties
That an institution remunerates a research-only staff member for performing academic activities other than research-only functions as defined in Higher Education Contract of Employment (HECE) Award.

In 1998, NTEU had much success in gaining the HECE Award.  It provides severance payments where contracts are not renewed and incremental progression based on total years of service.
Research staff issues high on NTEU’s agenda.

The NTEU is committed to working for improved conditions for all research staff. In recognition of particular needs of research staff, the Union will continue to build on our successes to date.   The following important issues will be high on the NTEU’s industrial and policy agenda in 2003 and 2004:

  • Ensuring that the level of grant funding for salaries as well as on-costs remain adequate
  • Lobbying for improved grant application processes
  • Advocating on behalf of research staff for appropriately funded research infrastructure
  • Advocating that researchers benefit from any changes to higher education policy proposed by the  Federal Government.
