Handling Members' Issues
Below please find a short list outlining the key elements to take into account when dealing with an issue on behalf of a member. Regardless of the nature of the issue, it is CRITICAL that Delegates check the protocols that exist within their own Branch for dealing with industrial matters. PROBLEM:
· What are the facts?
· How do I get all the facts?
· Is it an individual issue or a broader problem?
· What are the issues?
· Can the member settle it with assistance?
INFORMATION:
· What does the Agreement/Award say?
· Are there any other legal rights that apply?
· What does NTEU policy say?
· Who can I ask for advice or information?
· Is there a grievance procedure to follow? Is it applicable/appropriate?
PLAN:
· What does the member/s want?
· What can the member do to contribute towards the outcome?
· How should the issue be taken up?
· What are the possible options?
· What is the best option?
· How can we ensure both Branch membership and active involvement are increased as one outcome of this issue?
