Getting Involved

WANTED: NTEU INDIGENOUS UNION DELEGATES!

Indigenous representation within industry unions is critical tothe establishment of an independent and autonomous Indigenous voice.  Only then can wetackle the inequities that currently exist in Indigenous education and employment.  Untilwe focus our efforts to eliminate extreme workloads, low staffing levels and short term contracts asa matter of priority, Indigenous education and employment will continue to suffer.

To bring about some real change, we need to accept the responsibility, that as Indigenouspeople, employees and educators, we are best placed to identify the issues, and as such it is ourresponsibility to be involved in the decision-making processes that affect Indigenous employment andeducation.

The NTEU has allocated two identified Indigenous positions on each Branchand Division committee nationally. Only NTEU Indigenous members are eligible to voteor nominate for these positions.

As an Indigenous union delegate, you have the right under the WorkplaceRelations Act 1996 to negotiate the development of Indigenous employment strategies inyour institution.  Any such strategies developed without your involvement can be deemednull and void and subject to re-negotiation.

The NTEU National Office, together with the State and Territory Divisions and Branches, are committed to provide Indigenous union delegates with Industrial & Administrativesupport on request and will deliver any Union skills training yourequire. You will also be entitled to participate at the NTEU NationalIndigenous Forum as well as stand for a seat on the National Indigenous TertiaryEducation Policy Committee (ITEPC), which also provides support fordelegates through its membership and Indigenous policy.
