Union Representatives on Classification Committees

Module Overview

This workshop is designed specifically for members who have a role as union representatives on Classification Committees.

This module is designed to provide these members with more detailed information about the application of the HEW system including the local processes and the role of the union representative in that process, principles underpinning classification, the differences between skills and tasks for evaluation purposes, common problems with position documentation including computer aided questionnaires and strategies for addressing these, types of bias that may exist within the Committee and strategies for ensuring union views are treated legitimately in such an environment.

Module Objectives

By the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • Describe the role of the Union representative on a Classification Committee
  • List the key principles that underpin the classification process
  • Discuss the differences between skills and tasks and how this applies in a classification context
  • Identify the most common problems with position documentation including computer aided questionnaires and identify some possible strategies for addressing these
  • List and discuss the types of bias that may manifest itself in a classification committee and how this might be addressed
