No ALLY Group for LGBTIQ Staff at Griffith!
I started in the position of NTEU Griffith University Organiser some 6 weeks ago after working in other universities in Queensland for some time. To my surprise, there is no ALLY group operating at Griffith. The consequences of not having a group for LGBTIQ people on campus are that we, and many of the issues we face and fight for in our personal and professional life, become invisible. That is, we are assumed to be heterosexual until we speak the difference. We also still face discrimination in many of the laws that govern our relationships with each other and community members.
One issue that a group might want to address is the current phrase “That’s so gay”. This is hurtful and homophobic and requires a response at an institutional level.
At another level one might want to know why Griffith is the only University in the South East corner of Queensland that has not got an ALLY project running. The ALLY project is where individual staff members are trained to provide LGBTIQ staff and students with a safe space to discuss any issues in relation to homophobia, or can be a first contact for people who need referral for assistance to come out. They are not counsellors but they are asked to publically advertise that they are LGBTIQ friendly. Do we want that here at Griffith or would we want something more low key? These are kinds of things we could discuss at a meeting; besides having fun and meeting new people.
It is also concerning to know that there appears to be a lack of a visible LGBTIQ student group. Where do students go if they want support to come out?
Now Griffith, as we all know, is spread across many campuses. This will be a challenge in getting a group together in one spot at the same time. To begin people who are interested in being part of a LBGTIQ group could email me on n.anastasi@griffith.edu.au or phone X57635. We should really be trying to support each other both socially and politically and a lack of a group means a lack of presence and voice on campus. You don’t have to be a NTEU member to attend the group. Let’s get something started!
