A message from Rosemary Webb, Branch President re: Conversion Confusion
Many of you will have heard the DVC's interview with local ABC (Joanne Dodgson) on Tuesday morning, and Division Secretary Genevieve Kelly's rebuttal of his representation.
In view of management's muddying of the waters on conversion, fixed-term, the EB and HECE, I want to clarify our position further:
The NTEU position on fixed-term is for conversion of some fixed-term positions to continuing positions (identified according to criteria in the 2010 Enterprise Agreement), where those people have been effectively employed in rolling-over fixed-term contracts for an identified number of years. That is, we believe the University should not use a fixed-term contract where there is an on-going need for the job.
It is Not our position that people eligible for conversion should have to re-apply for their jobs. We understand from the DVC's interview with Joanne yesterday that he has now approved 25 applications for conversion from fixed-term to continuing. The Division has been advocating on behalf of members who have applied: should any of our members who we believe meet the eligibility criteria not yet have been approved, that advocacy will continue.
Please contact us urgently if you believed you were eligible, and have not been offered conversion. We'd also appreciate hearing from people who were successful in this offer. Please contact Lisa in the NTEU office, scu@nteu.org.au or on 66203297.
Re: Branch President contact, I'll be away on research then annual leave from this weekend, but Kate Mitchell (VP General) will act as President up until Christmas, and Jenny Johnston (VP Academic) from New Year to mid January.
In solidarity and a safe and happy festive season.
Rosemary
NTEU SCU Branch President
